Phil Wigham
Drummer & Musician
I have been teaching drums and music related subjects for over 20 years, and have been playing the drums for over 30 years, most of those years playing in various bands. I perform on acoustic, electronic and hybrid drum-kits, occasionally keyboard, and sometimes with Ableton Live software and other music performance technologies. My musical interests include performance, composition and mimetic digital musical instrument design.
Since 2000 I have been an active self-employed musician working in various bands, writing songs and composing long form electronic pieces, mainly recording and producing my own or collaborative work. Over the years I have received drum tuition from Andy Treacey (Faithless, Galliano, LL Cool J, Robbie Williams, to name a few), Tony Ramwell (Paratroopers military drummer and session drummer for Stock Aitken Waterman artists Jason Donovan, Cliff Richard and Sonia amongst others), Bill Young (Jazz impresario and drummer for comedian Max Wall) and Dave Hassell (renowned drummer, educator and Latin percussionist). I have also attended drum masterclasses by Dom Famularo, Trevor Thornton and Dave Mattacks.
In 2000 I completed a BA at Salford in Popular Music and Recording, following the Music Technology and Music Production pathway and majoring in drum performance and composition. I gained an MA in music (Contemporary Arts) in 2012, and was awarded a PhD in 2022, studying digital music instrument design. I have taught various music related subjects at Manchester Metropolitan University, whilst continuing my research in instrument design.
Currently my favourite drummers are Louie Weaver, Dom Famularo, Jeff Pocaro, Benny Greb and Karen Carpenter.
